What happens in the first few sessions?

We will begin by completing a  psychological needs assessment.  This will take place during the first few appointments.   During the initial assessment sessions we will work to identify the nature of your difficulties, both now and in the past,  we will identify the things  that trigger anxiety, panic or sadness, we will also set your therapeutic  goals, and identify your strengths and resources.  During these sessions you will have the opportunity to get to know me and ask me questions about what I do.    Our ongoing therapeutic work will involve us exploring aspects of your past and present.  The overall aim is to help you process your memories and emotions  and gain insight into your inner world (including your needs, insecurities,  wants, hopes and boundaries). Once you have insight into the ‘clockwork’ of your inner world you will feel more empowered to intervene and make changes to it.  During the course of therapy, I will also introduce simple , evidence-based and effective coping methods  during sessions and  ask you to practice the skills at home in order to  help you manage your mood and anxiety.

Where will the sessions be?

I work from welcoming, comfortable, and accessible consultation rooms in Hampton, TW12  and  Kingston-upon-Thames, KT1. The Hampton location  is near Hampton village, Hampton train station, the 111 and the 216 bus routes.  The Kingston consultation room is centrally located and near Kingston train station.  There is free or metered parking near both clinics and good transport links to Teddington, Shepperton, Walton-on-Thames, Surbiton, Hounslow, Sunbury, Hampton Hill, Twickenham, and London Waterloo.

How long is the first session?

The first session will typically last 1.5 hours.  The following few assessment sessions may last up to an hour. Thereafter, sessions will be for 50 minutes.

How often will sessions take place?

Typically sessions take place on a weekly basis, on the same day of the week and at the same time.

What is the cancellation policy?

I require 24 hours notice if you need to cancel.

Length of Therapy?

How many sessions you have will depend entirely on your personal needs, your finances and the complexity of the issues you are experiencing. I offer brief-focused counselling  which can be between 12-16 sessions or longer term open-ended psychotherapy.

Will sessions be confidential?

I adhere to the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) code of conduct and the British Psychological Society (BPS) code of ethics and conduct which means I must respect and maintain therapeutic confidentiality. Yet part of my role also involves  risk  assessment and management.   Therefore, if  a client demonstrates  immediate and significant risk to self or others  I have a professional duty of care to protect my client  and the  public, which may involve notifying  external organisations such as GP or police. This is very unlikely in private practice, and rarely occurs, however it is important for clients to understand the remits of professional  confidentiality.  Please read my Privacy Policy Notice which can be found here.
